Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer recently discussed the importance of Xbox’s expansion into the mobile gaming market during a guest appearance on the Official Xbox Podcast. With the acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, Spencer emphasized the need for Xbox to be “relevant” on mobile platforms.

Spencer revealed that he is currently visiting King’s headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden, to learn from the success of their existing mobile games. According to him, being present on the platform that the majority of the population plays on is crucial for Xbox’s future. He aimed to find a team that had already achieved remarkable success in the mobile gaming industry.

Although Microsoft had considered other potential acquisition targets, including Zynga, leaked documents from a court hearing earlier in the year revealed that Activision Blizzard King emerged as the best option. King, as a dedicated mobile publisher responsible for games like Candy Crush, has been a significant contributor to Activision Blizzard King’s mobile strength.

In addition to King, Activision Blizzard King has published successful mobile titles under the Activision and Blizzard banners, such as Call of Duty: Mobile and Diablo Immortal. Spencer expressed his intention to learn from the expertise of all these teams while assuring fans that Xbox console and Windows PC games will not be phased out.

Contrary to speculations, Spencer clarified that not all franchises would be converted into mobile games or adopt a free-to-play model. He stressed the importance of maintaining diversity within the brand. However, Spencer acknowledged that in order for Xbox to remain relevant in the global gaming landscape, it must establish a presence on the largest platform, which is mobile.

With Microsoft’s recent acquisition of ZeniMax Media, which brought mobile development capabilities through Alpha Dog Games and Bethesda Game Studios, Spencer’s vision of a unified Xbox store extending to mobile devices is starting to take shape. The inclusion of Activision Blizzard King’s massive mobile franchises will undoubtedly add an exciting dimension to the future of Xbox’s mobile gaming offerings.
